Rep. Takano Statement on the Passing of David Mixner

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Congressman Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released the following statement on the passing of LGBTQ rights and peace activist, David Mixner:

"I was honored to get to know David Mixner and his righteous stands through the movement to end nuclear proliferation in the 1980s and his work on behalf the LGBTQ community," said Congressman Mark Takano. "Last year, I was at a gathering of emerging LGBTQ leaders where David passed on the wisdom of a lifetime of being in the fray: Be careful of being too self-righteous and take care to build relationships with the other side. While this might have been surprising to some whose perceptions of David were defined by his dogged activism, it was not to me. David had the self-awareness to know that he was partly talking to himself. He suffered for the stands he took and weathered the trauma of being at the center of a community besieged by HIV/AIDS. David endeavored both to do right and to lead a life of positive consequence, and he succeeded."
